It started yesterday, that scratchy throat and feeling of tiredness. Before going to bed, I took some Zicam and fell asleep. Of course, waking up at 5am doesn’t help anything, but I still wasn’t feeling well. I took some more Zicam. Slowly, I felt better. I kept my appointment at the gym, which went well, but then I had to decide if I was going to go to the barn.
When I worked in an equine physiology lab as a tech, I remember reading an article about exercise and the horse’s immune response. Although the article I read was a research article, here is a good review article on the topic: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/8884712 . The gist of the article is that moderate exercise is good on the immune system but severe exercise is not. Of course I relate this to humans even though the studies were in horses. But my faith in the link between equine and human physiology is not unfounded. Here is an article that talks about the same subject in humans: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/12959703 . Another point is that exercise lowers immunity in people (and horses) who are sick.
With science behind me, I decided not to go to the barn. I don’t feel horrible, but I also don’t want to feel horrible. I spent the rest of the day on the couch working, drinking green tea, and cuddling with the dog and cat. Not a bad place to be.
