A Sheltered Life

PJ has been leading a sheltered life recently.  He’s living in a cushy stall, although he does go out at night.  He’s only been worked in a huge indoor with excellent footing and good ventilation.  And while it’s been great on his feet and our training, it has also affected him in negative ways.  Mainly, he’s been getting spooky.  The other day, in the indoor, he spooked at a tractor parked outside.  Before, that would never have made him blink twice.  This is not a good thing.

So today, I suggested to Maryann that instead of riding in the ring, we go for a hack. Although PJ was very good, he was much more looky than normal and he spooked big time at a barbecue.  Granted, the barbecue should not have been parked there by the river, but it wasn’t doing anything.  I think I’m going to have to take PJ out of the ring at least once a week.  Something else to worry about.
